This is the see-through barrier that prevents women, people from minority groups, and people living with neurodiversity or disability, from advancing into leadership roles, despite being well qualified to do so.

There are often in place explicit, clearly defined regulations that aim to prevent surreptitious choices when employing people in leadership roles. However, unconscious bias and prejudice covertly creep in, resulting in the exclusion of certain people, creating this metaphorical boundary. This results in fewer diverse role models to emulate and underrepresentation, facilitating the cycle's continuation.

The process of dismantling the glass ceiling frequently stems from a combination of systemic and individual actions plus inclusive policies, offering fair access to mentorship and sponsorship opportunities, and tackling unconscious biases within hiring and promotion procedures.
