81. TEACHINGS FROM THE LEPIDOPTERA. METAMORPHOSIS
The meaning of lepidoptera
Scientists classify butterflies and moths under the group Lepidoptera, which is a Latin term. The translation of the word is "scaly winged", and this is a perfect way to describe the delicate and intricate wings that are a key feature of these beings.
Symbolism of butterflies and moths
Across diverse cultures, butterflies are symbols of positivity, transformation, beauty, and spiritual emergence. In contrast, moths are often associated with more negative connotations and frequently regarded as unwanted guests within the home.
Perspectives on Omens
Some also think that moths predict the death of a loved one, considering them negative omens. However, from a spiritual perspective, death is simply another form of transformation—a shedding of the physical body that enables the spirit to soar freely. Thus, moths are not inherently negative, and there is much to learn from both butterflies and moths.
Despite these differing perceptions, both butterflies and moths share profound teachings about transformation and authenticity. They do not seek permission, approval, or validation for their metamorphosis. This process is a natural aspect of their life cycle, permitting them to transform majestically from within their humble chrysalis or secluded underground den.
The metaphor of metamorphosis
The transformation experienced by butterflies and moths is a powerful metaphor for the spiritual seeker's journey. It speaks to the necessity of turning inward, embracing solitude, and bringing conscious awareness into areas of darkness. This inner work leads to a metaphysical transformation into a being filled with light.
Lessons on boundaries and judgement
Notably, neither butterflies nor moths concern themselves with territorial boundaries or social hierarchies. There is much for us to learn from their way of existence. In a vision of a New Earth, boundaries dissolve, giving way to ethereal living, where thoughts manifest instantly. This underlines the importance of using consciousness wisely and being mindful of the influences shaping us and our children.
Butterflies and moths do not compare themselves by colour or type, nor do they concern themselves with identity labels. They simply act on instinct, untouched by societal, cultural, religious, or economic indoctrination. Their genetic coding guides their existence.
Transformation
Instinct similarly guides humans before they embark upon their own metaphysical transformation into beings of conscious light. Added to instinct, we then have layers of familial, cultural, religious, and social conditioning that we must navigate and transcend.
The nature / nurture argument
The interplay of nature and nurture is ever-present, forming the rationale for including the moth in the concept of MetaMorphosis. This journey is about embracing Universal Love and oneness, while learning to navigate both the darkness and the light. No one can reach the light without first acknowledging and working with the shadow.
Shed and evolve
Both butterflies and moths shed their exoskeletons multiple times during their growth, with butterflies forming a chrysalis and moths spinning a silk cocoon. Spiritually, we mirror this process, shedding layers of ego and identity as we move through various layers of conditioning and indoctrination.
Pollination and the search for light
Butterflies and moths are primary pollinators, comparable to honeybees. Because moths are primarily nocturnal, they are drawn to light, as they mistake artificial sources of light for the moon. Scientists believe they use the moon for navigation. The moth's attraction to light offers a lesson: seek the light within rather than externally, as an external pursuit can be harmful, much like how flames endanger moths.
Butterflies, on the other hand, are active during the day.
